Medicaid for Working People with Disabilities
The Medicaid for Working People with Disabilities (WPWD) program allows many people with disabilities who are working to get Medicaid coverage for which they might not otherwise qualify because their income is too high.
What are the eligibility requirements?
To qualify for WPWD, you must:
- Live in Vermont
- Be disabled according to Social Security standards
- Be employed or self-employed
- Have countable assets of less than $5,000 ($6,000 for a couple)
- Have net countable family income of less than 250% of the federal poverty level (FPL), based on your family size
- Have only moderate amounts of unearned income

*Note: Some deductions are allowed from gross income when determining if you meet the income test, so your income can be substantially higher than the amounts listed above and you could still qualify.
What does WPWD offer?
- Overall health care, including coverage for doctors, hospitals, and prescription drugs
- The chance to earn more money and still keep health care coverage
- The chance to save some or all of your earned income (as long as it’s in a separate account) and not have it counted as an asset against Medicaid eligibility.
Is family coverage available through WPWD?
No, it’s not. Only the person with a disability can be covered.
How much does it cost?
You may have to pay small co-pays for some services, such as prescription drugs.
Can I have other insurance and still get WPWD?
Yes, you can have Medicare or insurance through your employer and still get Medicaid. In some cases, Medicaid may pay your other insurance premiums.
